| Truman with a child at a campaign rally |
The election of 1948 pitted Republican Thomas Dewey against Democrat Harry S. Truman. Dewey was highly favored, mainly because of the Democratic party's three-way split and Truman's decreasing popularity. Many Republicans believed that
all Dewey had to do was be careful and keep his head down. This plan backfired, and Truman stole the nation's heart and enough electoral votes to beat out Dewey for office. This site is the anatomy of the 1948 election.
